View Full Version : Thumbnail
How do I upload a thumbnail for my map? I just want people to see what the map looks like in plan view, not a screen shot or anything fancy.

Any gif or jpg can be uploaded as the map thumbnail. It doesn't even have to be linked to an uploaded map if it's uploaded as a "Gallery" item. If it's bigger than 213x60 then it'll be automatically scaled down for the thumbnails sections of the site and held full size in the Gallery.
The map thumbnails on the site were done by taking a screenshot of the maps zoomed all the way out and then re-saving the screenshot as a jpg, I'm not sure if there's an easier way to get a plan shot of a map.

For making thumbnails, I found a nifty freeware utility at this site;

It's easy to use and does a fine job. You can make the thumbnail any size you want.

The Upload manager will automatically create the thumbnail from the uploaded "large" image :) It's all rather funky but uses software on the webserver to create another file that's resampled from the original JPG image.
Means nobody has to actually work out how to do a thumbnail from the map.
Only pain in the ass with Upload manager is that it doesn't allow addition of a thumbnail/screenshot after the item has been submitted. So if anyone wants to have a pic with their map that have to upload it at the same time as the map.
