Hey folks,
I was doing a Google search for some RRT logo's to use on my site, and came across, what I think, is the original RRT. It's a 720kb zip file. I downloaded it and unzipped it. It appears to be the game, but I'm not sure.
The game loads but I can't figure out the mouse and keyboard commands.
Here's a link to where I found it.

Here's a link to a shot of the unzipped files.

The "README.DOC" that you see in the shot doesn't give a whole lot of detail.
Anybody have an idea if this is the full game?

Edit 1: I tried bablefish to see if I could translate the page, but I'm not sure what language it is, so bablefish wasn't much help.

The look of the text and the .cz domain hints at czech.

Thanks CJN,
I haven't tried to translate yet. I'll try later, but another search led me to this site.

http://www.sedore.net/rails/

Now I know how to lay rail and build trains. Still got more reading to do, but it appears to be the actual game.
Since I didn't get started on computers until Win 95, those old DOS games sure look weird.

Looks pretty much like how I remember the original. Unfortunately it was SO long ago that I've no idea what the keys were.

Well I found what looks like the original manual, it's also allegedly the manual for RT Deluxe which was the original game with a few extras.

www.railroadtycoon.info/rt/rrtdeluxe-m.zip

It's basically the manual scanned and turned into a PDF. It's the manual that I remember from when I bought the original (it came on a whole load of 5.25" floppy disks from what I can remember)

Thanks WM. That was a big help.
That manual is much more detailed than the one that came with RRT2 or 3.
Ah, those were the good old days when folks actually cared about the product they released.

I've been playing this version now for the past couple of hours and I just can't seem to make any money, and I'm playing on easy.
I'd like to print the manual, but-186 pages?-Sheesh! , and I don't think you have the option to print on both sides with a PDF.
One thing about it, there's no sitting back watching the trains go by.
Now, a question (well, actually 3)-Is this version considered Abandoned-Ware? Since I downloaded it for free, is that un-ethical? Can this zip file I have be re-distributed?

Edit 1: I just found RRT Deluxe here

http://www.abandonia.com/games/427/Railroad_Tycoon_Deluxe

I'm assuming since this version is Abandoned-Ware, the older version is too. Also got the manual there too.

You can select to print Odd or Even pages or both in the "Print" dialog box. I think you can reformat things to print at 1/2 size, and print in Landscape mode to get 4 pages of text on one sheet of paper. I did this for some manuals I printed a while ago.

Thanks Wolvy. I'll check that out. :D

Can this zip file I have be re-distributed?Technically there's no such thing as "Abandoned-Ware", the copyright for RT will still belong to someone. I've no doubt that it's on some companies software catalog as an "asset". Who would have thought that the original Atari TV console games would make a comeback 20 years later......

However, I don't think that the copyright holder will be coming after you in the near future.

I've been playing this version now for the past couple of hours and I just can't seem to make any money, and I'm playing on easy. Ok, there's no "free movement" of cargo in RT. If the industry/farm, etc. isn't within the radius of your station then it won't transport. The economy is very simple in RT, take it from where it is to where it's wanted. There is a double value bonus for the first year of a new stations operation, however this year ISN'T a full year, it's until the end of the current year, so only build stations right after the yearly status report. Train types, "Express" trains will only stop at the stations on their list, "local" (I THINK that's what they are called) will stop at all stations inbetween (something I'd love in RT3!)

That's what I can remember from my fuzzy memory, not sure if it'll be any help.

Good point. If they haven't gone after the Abandoned-ware site, they'll probably never know about my site, but then again-there's probably not a lot of folks looking for those 2 versions.
Call me weird, but I have an unusual interest in collecting old pute stuff. I even have a few old DOS OS's, as well as a few versions of Win 3.X. I don't know why, I just do.

Edit 1: Looks like we posted at the same time. I'll keep those tips in mind.
Thanks!

I know the folks that are modding transport tycoon & transport tycoon deluxe (by chris sawyer) have done a lot of trouble to find the copyright holder. They contacted all the companies who might have the copyright, but not one knew by heart if they had the copyrights and they didn't care to look it up either. Chris Sawyer's recent follow-up (locomotion) didn't even use the transport tycoon name anymore, probably because he couldn't find the copyright holder either.

I don't know if the same situation is true for railroad tycoon (because it has follow-ups, so the copyright values might be higher). But anyway, whoever has the rights to the original and the deluxe version doesn't have the rights to the railroad tycoon name anymore and can't make any follow-ups (the name is now property of Poptop/Take2).

Here's an interesting follow up to this.

http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=5252

Although they don't show either game in their list of dowhloadable files, they haven't completely removed them from their site.
They can still be found here;

http://www.abandonia.com/games/427/Railroad_Tycoon_Deluxe.htm

and here:

http://www.abandonia.com/games/406/Railroad_Tycoon.htm

I guess that's a sneaky way to get around that ESA (http://www.theesa.com/) demand.
